How to Use the Database, Maps, and Advanced Search

Learn how to search, analyze, and visualize data, access external databases, and contribute new findings to our expanding archaeological resource.

Registration & Login

Users can freely explore and search the site without registration. However, to download site information or perform bulk downloads for GIS analysis, users must register and log in.

To register, users need to provide their name, e-mail address, and a secure password, then agree to the terms and conditions. For security, registration requires e-mail address verification. Once registered, logging in allows access to download features.

Users who wish to contribute a new site must also register.

Site Description

The site detail pages provide detailed information on each settlement, including its history, excavation data, references, and site characteristics.

The function “Cite this page” provides a formatted citation of the site information in Chicago style, ensuring proper attribution for academic and research use.

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search Page allows filtering of archaeological settlement data by category, chronological period, and province, displaying results on an interactive map.

Filters retrieve data dynamically. Each filter works independently and can also collaborate with others. The interactive map displays the location of each result spontaneously. Please note that using the “Reset Selection” option ensures smooth operation when making additional queries.

LuwianSiteMap

The interactive LuwianSiteMap displays all the second millennium BCE sites in western Anatolia known today. The sites are represented by clusters – each click on a cluster zooms in on the region or site of interest. Alternatively, users can zoom using the scroll wheel of their mouse. Clicking on markers opens a popup with relevant information.

The map supports full-screen viewing. Five different base maps are available for visualization. The map also includes a measurement tool that allows users to measure areas or lines and perform multiple measurements.

Submitting an Additional Site

Luwian Studies is a non-profit foundation that fosters research on the Bronze Age of western Anatolia, providing researchers and the public with essential data and various interactive tools. Therefore, it welcomes contributions, including information about Bronze Age sites not currently listed in our site catalogue.

To submit a new site, users must register and log in (see above). Information such as name, location and historical context can then be entered in a form. Submissions undergo a review process before publication.

Users can select the location of the new site on the map. The coordinates are automatically transferred to the form.
