Atarneus is located opposite the island of Lesbos, 2.5 km northeast of the the modern town of Dikili. The fortified Hellenistic settlement is situated on a natural hill. So far, no excavations have been conducted. According tot he surface finds, the earliest settlement dates to the 2nd millennium BCE. Numerous handmade, mostly light gray and reddish wares were found, of which some are decorated with engraved ornaments. The wheel-made pottery is closely related to that of Troy VI. According to Jürgen Driehaus, the handmade and wheelmade pottery can be divided into various groups: Schwarzpolierte, im Bruch schwarzgraue Gattung, die recht selten vorkommt und sich auf die Schüsseln mit eingeknicktem Rand beschränkt. Graupolierte, meist mittelgraue, oft auch nach olivgrau gehende Gattung, im Bruch grau bis braun. Selten sind Scherben mit schwarzpolierten Innen- und graupolierten Außenseite. Sie stammen meist von Schüsseln. An der Oberfläche und im Bruch braunrote Gattung, die polierte und rohe Bruchstücke umfasst.
